Guidelines
Registration procedure
In brief, the following procedure is recommended:
- Get in contact with a BCF coordinator either by e-mail (see contact) or by phone. This is for the initial discussion of your project and which equipment you want to use.
- Please register at our booking system.
- Please make an appointment with the local admin of the equipment to discuss the overall goals of your work and how to customize your experiments with us.
- Fill in the BCF-specific “Nutzungordnung” (terms of use), sign it, and send it to the coordinator / or local admin of the equipment you will use.
- The PI and you must fill in a “Nutzungsvereinbarung” (user agreement) and send it to the coordinator / or local admin of the equipment you will use.
- When you have prepared your test samples according to the recommendations made during the initial meeting with the core facility, we will introduce you to the instruments for a basic acquisition setup with your samples.
- Training (1 – 4 hours) is mandatory if you want to use the instrument unassisted. Afterward, you are allowed to make bookings for the instrument.
- We will provide specific data analysis software located at the SIKT and VMF Workstation to improve your experiments and for further discussion.
Assisted use
The users should contact the scientific adviser to schedule an appointment on the instrument when both parties are available.
Training for unassisted use
To use instruments of the BCF on your own, each user must undergo training by the local administrator of the facility for each microscope system s/he wants to use.
Booking
For booking of the BCF instruments, please use our online booking tool. Booking times: 24/7 is possible, with a few exceptions. Please inform us if you use the instruments at weekends and at night.
Data retention policy
After the image acquisition, users must transfer data from microscopes to a local server. Data must be transferred from the server to our workstations or your own device for imaging processing.
Users are responsible for their own data and should set up their own data storage system compatible with general data retention rules.
Publications
Please, consider the following information regarding “Acknowledgements” and send us a notification if an experiment performed on facility instrument is published in a scientific journal.

What is the BCF?
The BioImaging Core Facility (BCF) of the Faculty of Veterinary Medicine and the Faculty of Life Sciences of the University of Leipzig provides users with a broad portfolio of light microscopes including an atomic force microscope. These can be used autonomously after registration and instruction. Furthermore, a cryostat, a paraffin microtome and a paraffin embedding and pouring station are available. All technical details of the equipment (Equipment) and the respective costs for the use of the equipment or for the performance of work by the staff of the BCF are listed separately (Costs).

Who can use BCF equipment
The BCF is a multi-user unit. Groups from Leipzig University as well as other academic and commercial users can use the BCF equipment or address investigations carried out by the staff of the BCF as a service.

Does the BCF offer the use of the instruments even without experiments?
Yes, this is generally of no problem. BCF offers its high-end equipment together with the necessary training on the instruments given by the staff. The training depends on your individual needs.
